 Goals of this session:

NOTES:
*In order to access many of these resources you will need to activate your UCINetID and configure your browser -- instructions under Connecting from Home (Proxy Server (bottom of page) is recommended option).*

Throughout this lesson we will consult the UCI Libraries online Dance Subject Guide (each section is linked to appropriate category) - please bookmark for your personal use.

Four types of preliminary research strategies (also consult Dance Subject Guide):

1. Interviewing experts.

2. Browsing.

Call number ranges for Dance
GV 1580-1799.3  Dancing
Z 7514 Dance bibliographies and catalogs

3. Footnote/Bibliography Tracking.
Find a good book or article and use the footnotes or bibliography to lead you to additional information. The assumption is that the author has researched this field and identified the most important sources.

*Start by looking at bibliographies in major encyclopedias like*:
International Encyclopedia of Dance. 6 vols. (Reference GV 1585 I586 1998)
New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians 20 vols. (Online and Reference ML 100 N48 2001)

4. Structured Approach to Browsing.
Use online library catalogs with Library of Congress subject headings for finding books or videos.  Keyword searching can also be effective (use performer, artist, choreographer names, styles, titles, etc.) but subject headings often yield more results (and they are hot linked in Antpac for "spin-off searching").  A new feature of Antpac is "Select a Collection" which allows you to limit to Films and Videos if you wish.

Here are a sampling of the structure of Library of Congress subject headings (there are many more).  You can ask for the bound volumes listing all headings at the Reference Desk (or use spin-off approach):

Go to the UCI Libraries Homepage (http://www.lib.uci.edu). We will take a brief "virtual tour" of this site in class but the most important resource for you will be the  Dance Subject Guide .  This contains a sampling of the most crucial research resources and is always a good starting point for a research project.  Make use of help menus in databases as they can help you improve your searches!  We will do some sample searches in class but see the Subject Guide for mini-tutorials (under "How to find Dance books and other materials").  You may also use the general library tutorials. -TOP-

Article Databases or How Do I find Articles in Scholarly Journals?

Use article databases for finding journal/newspaper articles and more (access by clicking on these direct links or use the Dance Subject Guide).  Alternatively, go to Online Research and search the alphabetical lists of Article Databases and Selected List of Resources.  Also, most are searchable by title in ANTPAC, where you'll find print and internet access.  Once you have located articles you with to consult, click on interactive UC e-links to look up in Melvyl or do a Journal Title search in Antpac (this will be demonstrated in class).

Videos (housed and available for viewing in the Multimedia Resource Center, 1st floor):

Search strategy: All the UCI videotapes are in ANTPAC. Do a keyword search using the words "danc* and Mexic*" and select "Film and Videos Collection" from the second drop-down menu. This picks up any videorecordings with the truncation of the word dance, dancing, dances, etc. This is not a comprehensive list, because some videorecordings are cataloged under performance title or the choreographer/creator's name.  Subject heading or keyword searching on style or genre, performer names in this collection can be effective as well.

Here are a few examples of  videos covering Mexican dance.

Internet Sites

Again, please also consult the Dance Subject Guide as a gateway and use search engines such as Google (highly recommended for reputable and relevant results) or others.  Please keep in mind that you must analyze any web site for the reputation and legitimacy of the author and content.  But, full-text journal articles that you find online via the library web site are still reputable journal articles from scholarly sources.  You may consult Professor Ruyter or your TA about including these in your research project.  Many style guides now include formats for citing electronic materials -- see Citing Sources.

Some internet sites of interest relating to dance in Mexico:

Alegria home page
About Los Danzantes de Alegría and its adult group Grupo Folklórico México Tenochtitlan

Arts and History: Virtual Forum of Mexican Culture
This is a forum for Mexican culture providing links to museums, photographers, cultural institutions, dance, literature, theater,
television, cinema and libraries. A monthly feature highlights a particular artists or art form with commentary. The site is bilingual.

Special Collections in Dance

UCI houses many Special Collections in Dance -- these include rare books and manuscripts and papers of distinguished artists at UCI and in the world.  These are searchable through the Online Archives of California or by visiting the 5th floor.  Bill Landis will present this invaluable resource.  The Dance Subject Guide also highlights these resources.
