There are many resources at the UCI Libraries devoted to the study of biomedical engineering. The collection is young as is the academic program here and it is focused upon the general materials, and the specific research interests and coursework that is offered at the present. It is anticipated that the collection will grow rapidly in parallel as the program expands its emphases and more faculty and students join it. Some of the current special interests reflect strong interdisciplinary interests and include: tissue engineering, molecular engineering, protein engineering, laser technologies, transplantation, optic sensors, biomedical devices and instrumentation, implants, biomechanics, Microelectromechanical Systems or MEMS or BIOMEMS, relationships to biotechnology, computational methods and genomic statistics and relationships.

There are several methodologies to use to find resources:
1. ANTPAC - online catalog for UCI - most current source for all materials that are part of the collections and accessible at the UCI Libraries in all formats - includes print, nonprint, video, software, etc
2. MELVYL - online collection for all UC campuses and for the electronic materials bought cooperatively by the California Digital Library
3. WorldCat - international bibliography of library holdings - UCI's holdings are indicated

1. PubMed - the only method to search MEDLINE
2. BIOSIS - searches the biological and life sciences
3. INSPEC - covers electrical engineering & computer science; indexes IEE & IEEE, SPIE and other professional literature
4. IEEE Xplore - covers all IEEE publications, including journals and conference proceedings
5. ACM - most of the publications from the Association of Computing Machinery are included
6. COMPENDEX - Engineering Index - most disciplines of engineering
7. Science Citation index in the WEB OF SCIENCE - soon to be part of the Web of Knowledge
8. Current Contents - via OVID
Electronic Journals - consult ANTPAC for access by title or subject heading; consult the UCI Libraries Homepage at www.lib.uci.edu and then "E-Resources Locator" and "Fulltext Online Journals" and choose either by title, subject or publisher. Conference Proceedings - a very valuable and critical element of scholarship in this field due to the fast developments and releases of information; we have many transactions and conference proceedings - some are listed as monographs and some are periodicals. The majority of conference proceedings in print format circulate.
ANALYTICAL TOOLS -
1. ISI Journal Citation Reports (JCR) for Science and Social Sciences - online from 1999 but tables include additional years of data through the most recent year
BUSINESS RESOURCES - there are many resources that contain information about business and entrepreneurial strategies in biomedical engineering and product development. The marketing trends, business cycles and company information, business news and investment opportunities are noted on the Business & Management Subject Pages.
MEDICAL RESOURCES - the clinical collection is at the Grunigen Medical Library but the Science Library has the largest medical collection. Please consult the Medical Subject Guide.
REFERENCE ASSISTANCE - besides contacting the Engineering Librarian, you can visit the Science Library Reference Desk (hours), engage in eMail reference or LIVE CHAT, or schedule a research consultation by using the Ask-a-Librarian service.
