There are many resources at the
UCI Libraries devoted to the study of electrical engineering & computer
science. The collection is relatively
young at about 50 years with the birth of the discipline about then and the UCI
collection is focused upon the general materials, and the specific research
interests and coursework that is offered at the present on campus. It is anticipated that the collection will
grow rapidly in parallel as the program expands its emphases and more faculty
and students join it. Some of the
current special interests reflect strong interdisciplinary interests and
include: relationships and support to other units in SSOE and the Bren School
of ICS, as well as software design, embedded systems, computer
networks, middleware, real-time systems, micro-electro- mechanical systems and
nanotechnology, communication systems, machine intelligence, and neural and
soft computing, computer system design, high-speed analog and digital circuit
design, signal and image processing, electromagnetics, photonics,
high-efficiency power electronic circuits and alternative energy generation,
etc.
The UCI Library Website is your point of
departure as you seek information - http://www.lib.uci.edu
Specific areas to search:
There are several
methodologies to use to find resources:
1.
ANTPAC - online catalog for UCI - most
current source for all materials that are part of the collections and
accessible at the UCI Libraries in all formats - includes print, nonprint,
video, software, etc
2.
MELVYL
- online collection for all UC campuses and for the electronic materials bought
cooperatively by the California Digital Library
3.
WorldCat - international bibliography of
library holdings - UCI's holdings are indicated
Indexing & Abstracting Tools or Databases and
they, plus others are noted on the Electrical
Engineering & Computer Science Subject Guide or the ICS Subject Guides
1.
INSPEC - covers electrical engineering
& computer science; indexes IEE & IEEE, SPIE and other professional
literature
2.
INSPEC Archive (covers 1898-1968)
3.
IEEE Xplore - covers all IEEE
publications, including journals and conference proceedings
4.
ACM Digital Library - most of the
publications from the Association of Computing Machinery are included
5.
COMPENDEX - Engineering Index - most
disciplines of engineering
6.
Science Citation
index in the WEB OF SCIENCE -
9.
BIOSIS - searches the biological and
life sciences
10.
PubMed - the only method to search
MEDLINE
Electronic Journals - consult ANTPAC for access by title or subject heading; consult the
UCI Libraries Homepage at www.lib.uci.edu
and then "Find Online
Resources," and enter element of resource with which you are familiar
either by searching or browsing. UC
eLinks support the following publishers which are strong in this subject
area:
·
Elsevier (Science
Direct) & Academic Press
·
Springer (LINK)/ Kluwer/Plenum - also contains Lecture Notes in
Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and other Springer eBook series
·
Wiley/Blackwell
·
Taylor &
Francis
·
AAAS (Science)
& STKE
·
Nature Group
·
IEEE - via IEEE
Xplore
·
American Chemical
Society (ACS)
·
American
·
·
·
·
·
Association of
Computer Machinery Digital Library (ACM)
·
Society of
Industrial & Applied Mathematics - (
·
International
Society of Optical Engineering (SPIE)
Specialized titles & resources:
1.
Annual Reviews - coverage in
the disciplines of social, behavioral, physical and applied sciences. Particularly strong from bibliographic essays
on different important topics.
2.
eBooks -
CRCNetbase for different literatures in science, engineering & technology
books published by CRC; also check out entire book collections from CRCNetBase
and different Wiley series in microwave and optical engineering among other
eBook collections.
3.
Conference Proceedings - a very valuable and critical element of scholarship
in this field due to the fast developments and releases of information; we have
many transactions and conference proceedings - some are listed as monographs
and some are periodicals. The majority
of conference proceedings in print format circulate and are sometimes in the
Drum and sometimes in the Bar treated like serials.
4.
Government Information - increasingly resources are included in ANTPAC but
specific subject
guides may also direct you
ANALYTICAL TOOLS -
1.
ISI Journal Citation Reports (JCR) for
Science and Social Sciences - online from 1999 but tables include additional years
of data through the most recent year
BUSINESS RESOURCES - there are many resources that contain information about business and
entrepreneurial strategies in biomedical engineering and product
development. The marketing trends,
business cycles and company information, business news and investment
opportunities are noted on the Business
& Management Subject Pages.
MEDICAL RESOURCES - the clinical collection is at the Grunigen Medical Library but the Science
Library has the largest medical collection.
Please consult the Medical
Subject Guide.
REFERENCE ASSISTANCE - besides contacting the Engineering Librarian, you can visit the
Science Library Reference Desk (hours), engage in
eMail reference or LIVE CHAT, or schedule a research consultation by using the Ask-a-Librarian service.
BIBLIOGRAPHIC MANAGEMENT SYSTEM SOFTWARE - currently two options exist:
1.
RefWorks - a free
web-based system - you can read more about it and register for this at http://www.lib.uci.edu/libraries/new/archives/refworks.html
2.
EndNote - a
description about this product is at http://www.lib.uci.edu/bms/endnote.html - take the trial before you invest and make
sure it is something that you feel comfortable using
