This library guide will satisfy most of your research needs for your paper.   However, the list is not comprehensive.  Below is a list of other helpful subject guides found on the UCI Libraries' Page that provide other sources for research.

LIBRARY CATALOGS

In a library catalog, you can discover whether UCI (or any UC library) owns a book, video, or newspaper on your topic.

Antpac        Antpac Tutorial
Locate books, journals, government documents, electronic resources, microform, video & more at UC Irvine.

Melvyl
Locate books, journals, government documents, electronic resources, microform, video & more throughout the UC system.  Note: If UCI does not own the item, use the "Request" button to retrieve it from Interlibrary Loan.  If the item is available, it usually arrives within 3-7 working days after the request.

Search Strategy -- Keyword to Subject.  When doing your research, start with a keyword search.  When you find a book or another item that is ideally suited for your topic, look at the subject headings in the record.  Then, perform another search under that subject heading.  Below is a list of subject headings I have discovered that relate to Literary Journalism as a field:

Reportage Literature                                                                                   Reporters and Reporting

Journalism -- United States -- History -- 20th century                               American essays -- History and criticism

NEWSPAPERS

Below are links to online newspapers and a newspaper index.  Except for the Historical Newspapers, most online newspapers only go back to 1980 at the very earliest.  We also own newspapers on microfilm, many going back to the 1800s.  These microfilms are located in the Current Periodicals Room, which is on the second floor of the Langson Library.  To see if UCI owns a particular newspaper, do a "Title/Journal Title" search in Antpac.  Click on The San Francisco Chronicle to see a sample Antpac record.

Newspaper Aggregators
The following newspaper collections are text only articles that provide primary sources for your research.  The date range for these newspapers vary, with the oldest dates going back to 1980.

America's Newspapers (NewsBank)
Links to 269 newspapers across the United States.  Go here for many local California newspapers, such as the Los Angeles Times and the OC Register.
Confused about connectors?  Click on the following help guide for connectors in America's Newspapers.

Lexis-Nexis
Full-text regional, national and international newspapers - including the Washington Post and the New York Times, as well as legal newspapers such as the National Law Journal.
In Lexis-Nexis, start with a "Guided News Search" to search different newpapers across the United States.
Confused about connectors?  Click on the following help guide for connectors in Lexis-Nexis.

Historical Newspapers
Below are links to the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, and Wall Street Journal.  The links below are scanned in newspaper articles as if you were reading them from microfilm.  A great resource if you need pictures or if you need articles before 1980.

Los Angeles Times
1881-1953 (Historical) 1985-present
New York Times
1851-2001 (Historical)
2002-present
Wall Street Journal
1889-1985 (Historical)
1986-present

The Historical portions of these three newspapers can be searched simultaneously.  To do so, visit any one of the Historical Newspaper links above.  Once there, click on "Select Multiple Databases" and then choose the historical portions of the LA Times, NY Times, and Wall Street Journal.

Newspaper Indexes
Historical Newspapers Online

Indexes of newspaper articles from The Times® (London) and The New York Times and a substantial portion of full-text for The Times (London).

OTHER SITES

Online Reference Resources
Found on the UCI Libraries home page, this site contains links to reference resources that will be beneficial to visit during the beginning stages of your research.  Two sections of this page that may be beneficial are the ones for Biography and Encyclopedias.

AccuNet/AP Photo Archive (Associated Press images)
Search and download images from the AP photo archive.  Images you may find include crime scenes and photos of those involved in the crime.
Search Tip:  Use single quote marks around names or any sting of words to be searched together (e.g. 'Lizzie Borden').

Crime Library
Site produced by Courtroom Television.  Contains brief accounts of various crimes.

Google  and Evaluating Web Pages
Google is one of the premier search engines of Internet pages.  But Google also contains a lot of unreliable information.  Before you use any information in Google, please be sure to evaluate the content and the authority of that Web site.  The above "Evaluating Web Pages" developed by a librarian at UC Berkeley will help you do so.
