Selective Information Resources to Support Fuel Cell Research

The UCI Libraries homepage is designed to be a gateway or portal to information resources to serve the UCI community.  The ANTPAC online catalog contains all information resources in all formats available to users.  The Melvyl Catalog is the holdings of all 10 UC campuses.  In order to access resources from off-campus, UCI users will need to install VPN Software as described.   Most of the print collection will be found at the Science Library (SL) with the Government Information and Business Literature at the Langson Library (LL)

 

Selective Subject Headings may include the following terms and can be searched by keyword to retrieve element in title, abstracts, table of contents, authorship, and subject headings:

Databases: (Indexing and abstracting services covering journal literature, some conference proceedings and related content) - in many of these databases, links to full-text coverage and library holdings are provided by UC eLinks.

  1. Compendex (1884-) Engineering Index via Engineering Village (EV2) platform
  2. Web of Science (1900-)  access to the Science Citation Index and the related Journal Citation Reports which is an analytical tool for ranking journals by citation and impact factor - select Science Edition and Subject: Energy & Fuels and a ranking of 62 journals can be ranked or sorted by different factors back to 1997
  3. The Most - the most cited, most read, and most influential articles from the American Chemical Society publications. Rankings of Most-Cited Articles listed are based on data from Thomson ISI® Web of Science. Hot Papers listed are articles published within the last 2 years receiving the most citations over the most recent 2-month period, as identified by Thomson ISI® Essential Scientific Indicators. Most-Accessed Articles listed are based on article web view data collected following COUNTER-compliant ACS Usage Reports. Listings are organized by journal
  4. SciFinder Scholar - Chemical Abstracts Services - requires that search be conducted from a computer where special software has been downloaded. A new version is available in September 2005.  Additional information is available at explanatory page about installation of client software. Also covers patent literature. Full-text coverage of the ACS publications from 1996 is available.
  5. INSPEC  (1969-) covers physics, electrical engineering & computer science and interdisciplinary subjects in engineering, technology and related areas. 
  6. INSPEC Archive (1898-1968) - coverage of entire database archive
  7. Transport - database divided into 3 categories of coverage, 2003-; 1998-2002; and pre1998.  Covers transportation literature from Transportation Research Information Services affiliates around the world via OECD, etc.
  8. Google Scholar - index to selective scholarly and scientific literature in periodicals, books, and other formats with UC eLinks
  9. BNA Environment & Safety Library (ESL) - weekly news updates in the Environmental Reporter, and International Environment Reporter and easy access in the main ESL to federal and state regulations and statutes
  10. Digital Dissertations (1863-) this is the UMI Dissertation Abstracts Database.  Free online access to all full-text from 1997 dissertations is available for theses and dissertations completed at any UC campus.  Requests by faculty and graduate students can be made via ANTPAC ILL for other dissertations and all costs are subsidized by the UCI Libraries.
  11. SciFinder Scholar - database from the American Chemical Society which requires software to be loaded in order to access outside the UCI Libraries - includes an index to chemical literature and patents and structure database

Specialized Full-text Resources

1.     AIAA - access to full-text online journals, papers and proceedings (2000-2006) from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics

2.     ASME  - access to the full-text journals and transaction publications of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.  Online access to individual titles is available via ANTPAC

3.     ASCE - access to the journals and proceedings of the American Society of Civil Engineers including full backfile.  Access to individual titles is available via ANTPAC

4.     SAE - access to technical papers and standards from the Society of Automotive Engineers is restricted due to an inability to negotiate digital rights management

5.     MRS OPL - conference papers from the Materials Research Society in the Online Proceedings Library

6.     SPIE - access to Proceedings of the SPIE and journals of the International Society for Optical Engineering

7.     Annual Reviews - this series of review literature may be of interest in Fluid Dynamics, Chemistry, Materials Science or any of the other series with full archive

8.     Energy Central - Contains news of the Energy Industry from a range of commercial news services and business sources, including industry data and company profiles; arranged in an updated news release chronology easily searchable; provides access to many blogs on different topics in the energy sector like power generation and emissions, power delivery, energy use and management, etc; job listings; interviews; etc

9.     News Sources - there are many:

·           Factiva - indexes the business trade literature

·           Lexis Nexis Academic Universe - News - fulltext newspaper and wire service content without images

·           Subject Guide on News and Newspapers - will lead to local, regional, national and international papers in databases and to which UCI Libraries have current and backfiles in different formats

·           CRCNetBase.com content for EngNetBase ( over 800 titles currently) and specifically for Mechanical Engineering where you will find handbooks and reference titles with a range of subject coverage - all titles are also listed in ANTPAC

·           Knovel - Online Interactive Books and Database reflecting subject strength in Chemistry, Engineering and Materials Science, with a large number of online science & engineering handbooks, and a total of 1200+ titles, also all in Antpac.

Atomic Archive - contains extensive collection of data and interactive maps about nuclear stockpiles, facilities and forces in almanac, many different reference sources including biographies of people who shaped the atomic age, timeline of the nuclear age, a significant resource library and the science behind developing nuclear energy

  1. NASA - a rich source of content from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and searches for research information can best be done with this search interface
  2. TRIS Online - National Transportation Library Database hosted by the Transportation Research Board
  3. Official Energy Statistics from the Energy Information Administration containing official energy statistics
  4. Information Bridge from the Department of Energy (DOE) contains report literature in chemistry, physics, materials, environmental sciences, energy technologies, renewable energies, engineering and computer/information sciences.  From 1994, also contains contractor reports.
  5. Energy, Science, & Technology Information Resources – U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) - provides full-text access to DOE research from 1995, bibliographic citations to DOE research from 1948. 
  6. The Energy Information Portal is another excellent source for access to energy information
  7. Energy Citations Database from 1948 maintained by DOE
  8. Energy Files from the Energy Science & Technology Virtual Library
  9. NTIS - Technical reports issued by government agencies from 1964
  10. National Renewable Energy Lab - full coverage of the work and output of the National Lab in Golden, CO
  11. Online Fuel Cells Information Resources - not totally current but identifies a variety of resources including many government reports and publications and some content we have at UCI Libraries and some we do not have.  Consult ANTPAC for specific holdings.
  12. California Stationary Fuel Cell Collaboration - public/private collaborative sponsored by the California Air Resources Board
  13. California Energy Commission - contains links to the State Annual Integrated Energy Policy Reports and other work of the Commission and data that it releases

Official source for U.S. patents and trademarks in full text from 1976 (full page images available since 1790) with links to the Library of Congress for copyright information. Definitions, application forms and instructions, handbooks, notices, and patent attorney directory are just a few of the products provided. Includes design patents and reissued patents as well as patents currently in application process (coverage starts March 2001). Full-text searching is available.

Under "Legal Research" is a Patent Research section for searching of Patents (1971 to date), by individual category of Design Patents, Plant Patents or Utility Patents. Can also search by keyword, assignee, inventor, patent number, classification, and lawyer.

Selective Business & Statistics Resources - there is wide coverage of trends, statistics, data in the commercial applications of energy, fuel cells, hybrid and electric vehicles, public utilities and green or environmental initiatives.

 

Business Source Premier - major indexing of business literature; contains much fulltext

 

Standard & Poor’s NetAdvantage

Company and industry information. Use the "keyword" search at the top and consider entering fuel cells, energy, alternative energy, hybrid vehicles, etc. Industry surveys include; Current Environment; Industry Profile; Industry Trends; How the Industry Operates; Key Industry Ratios and Statistics; How to Analyze a Company, and Industry References.  Also, check Sub-Industry Review for Automobile Manufacturing.

 

IBIS World

Contains research reports on hundreds of U.S. industries. Each report provides key statistics for the industry, and discusses market characteristics, segmentation, industry conditions, e.g. barriers to entry, cost structure, industry outlook, technology and impact of globalization, the major companies in the industry and the current and historic performance of the industry. Look under “Business Environment" or "Industry Market Research" under topics such as, Energy, Fuel Cells, Alternative Fuels, Alternative Vehicles, etc.

 

Investext Plus

Investment research, industry analysis and reports. Look under “Automobiles" or "Energy" and refine search with keyword amplification and geographical point of reference and restrict to a time period and you will retrieve fulltext business reports, news & trade publication articles.

 

Forrester - Forrester focuses on the business implications of technology change and is considered the leading source for forecasting. Forrester's research publications analyze a broad range of technology areas such as new media, computing, software, networking, telecommunications and the Internet, and project how technology trends will affect businesses, consumers, and society. Forrester reports include up-to-date industry statistics, as well as illustrative graphs and charts.  Does cover emerging technologies, "green or environmental" trends and some business coverage on energy companies.  Requires login using UCINetID and password.

 

Gartner - Web site provides access to the research and advisory firm's information technology news, research reports, and business and market analysis, and includes product descriptions and comparisons, information on trends, and a calendar of upcoming conferences and events for IT managers, specialists, and business interests.  Reports data in "hypercycles" with standard output for interpretation. Requires login using UCINetID and password.
