This handout will introduce you to library resources and services and lead you to how to conduct the research you need to complete the assignments for this course.  Hopefully, you will be able to translate the process to other research assignments you need to complete.  This quarter the UCI Libraries are open every day but Thanksgiving Day.  Remember that the quarter passes quickly, so you will want to stay ahead of the deadlines.

In order to work efficiently in the Libraries, you may want to:

1)     master e-mail so that you can send results from conducting literature searches in different databases and file in e-mail folders for future reference

2)     learn how to use ANTPAC and MELVYL – in order to access holdings

3)     access to library resources from off-campus - make sure that you can Connect from Off-Campus when you need to - access to licensed resources requires authentication - follow directions for one of the two options in using VPN.  If you have difficulties, contact NACS at 949-824-2222

Hours of the Libraries are:

                        Monday - Thursday from 7:30am - 11pm

                        Friday from 7:30am - 9pm

                        Saturday from 9am – 9pm

Sunday from 10am - 11pm

Extended Study Centers are open until 3am

You have four homework assignments to complete as requirements for this course.  Each of them introduces you to different research methodologies and documentation from the scholarly, academic and popular press literatures.  This handout illustrates how best to proceed with assignment #4.  If followed, you will have virtually no problem in getting things done correctly.  Plan your time accordingly and do not wait until the last possible moment to gain access to the resources you need!

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT 4 - There are several different ways to approach this assignment.  Remember that you are looking for newspaper articles published from 2006-2007 that reference scholarly or scientific content that had an original publication in a scholarly journal.  This reference to a scholarly journal means that it was initially published by a scholarly society such as the American Psychological Association (indexed via PsycARTICLES), American Association for the Advancement of Science (publishes Science) or by a commercial publisher, such as the New England Journal of Medicine, a self-contained publisher or a global publishing conglomerate such as Elsevier or Blackwell, to name just a few major publishers.

Increasingly, both the newspapers and journals will be available online but there are some that may only be available in print and you will locate them in the Current Periodicals Rooms (CPR) at either the Langson Library (LL) or at the Science Library (SL).  Thus, please remember that at the LL the CPR is arranged by call number and at the SL, the CPR is arranged alphabetically by journal title.   Newspapers are retained on microfilm and the older issues are also at LL CPR, and many newspapers are available online.  Several easy and full-proof methods to find the scholarly article are to follow these directions and hints:

I.                 Read newspapers or search a Newspaper database for current issues from 2006-forward.  The databases have different date parameters and need to be set accordingly.  The articles should tell you the names of the scientists or scholars who engaged in the study so you can search by author; and the news article should report the original source or journal title where the research is published.  The Subject Guide for News and Newspapers will lead you to appropriate sources which may include:

·           Global Newsbank

·           America's Newspapers

·           Lexis Nexis Academic Universe - News - specify that you want NEWS from the top tool bar; then after you enter your search strategy, use the pull-down menu to "Select Sources" and then "US Newspapers and Wires."  Remember that the search default is for 3 months - use the next pull-down menu to change that if needed

·           Specific papers - Los Angeles Times, Orange County Register - there are different periods of coverage on the newspaper's website for free access - you can register at some of them for more extended access

After you find the news article you want in the popular press, you need to trace the citation to the original release.  Comparing the two articles is the interesting part of this assignment.

II.               You have several choices in finding the article - you should have the source or title of original publication of the research article, as well as the lead author and some keywords to describe the title and article.

A.    Use ANTPAC to search for the journal title - assuming it is electronic, and you get to the journal page, you can usually conduct a search and retrieve the article

B.    Choose appropriate database to find article depending on where the journal is indexed - if your guess is wrong ask at the Reference Desk.  Recommendations include any of the three following resources in which you can search by author or keyword.  Use the UC eLinks icon to determine whether we have the article in our collection - either online as a fulltext article or in print.  Limit to the correct dates.

·           PsycINFO - search by author or keyword

·           Expanded Academic ASAP - search by author or keyword

·           PubMed - indexes the clinical medicine and health literature

You also may want to look for several examples in case you do not easily find the original source.  Look for clues such as, “so&so at the XYZ hospital, clinic, university, wrote in Science or the New England Journal of Medicine or Lancet, …..This makes it easy to trace.

CITATION means:

            Author(s)

            Title of the article

            Source of the article

Volume #, Issue #, date and pages.

The APA Style is documented in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 5th ed., 2001 and is found at all the Library Reference Desks at BF76.7 .P83 2001   with updates on how to cite electronic resources at http://www.apastyle.org/elecref.htmlIn APA format, the article citation will be:

Author, F. M. (2006). Title of the article, Journal Title, volume #, (issue #), pages

For a newspaper article it will be different and unlike other periodicals, p. or pp. precedes page numbers for a newspaper reference in APA style. Single pages take p., e.g., p. B2; multiple pages take pp., e.g., pp. B2, B4 or pp. C1, C3-C4.  Example follows:

S   Schultz, S. (2005, December 28). Calls made to strengthen state energy policies. The Country Today, pp. 1A, 2A.

     OTHER HINTS:

1.                1.  If you need to print or copy articles at the UCI Libraries, you will need to buy a copy card - available from machines throughout all libraries - when printing, save item and go to a network printer nearby to retrieve copy by using the key# you assigned it.  If you have a choice in printing the article, select option to print out the pdf using the printer icon instead of using the print option under "File"

·                  2.  If you have need additional assistance for this assignment, contact Liaison Librarian or you may want to use reference services via  Ask   a Librarian to sign up for a Research Consultation with a reference librarian at either the Langson or Science Libraries.
