To get started:

• Determine your research question
• Develop a list of keywords or phrases that reflect your research question
• Decide where you are going to look for information
• Start with specific concepts (as keywords) but be prepared to refine your search based on what you find and read -- including new vocabulary or new expectations about the amount of existing research
• When you find a good article on your topic in an article database, analyze the subject headings or descriptors in the record to add words to or refine your search terms according to the vocabulary of that particular database

Getting there:

• From the library homepage http://www.lib.uci.edu click on Subject Guides -- choose the Subject Guide most appropriate to your topic. Once you know the database you need, you can find it directly in an alphabetical list under Article Databases on the library's homepage.
• Many of the social sciences/social ecology databases share the same user interface (Cambridge Scientific Abstracts (CSA) Illumina) and can be searched simultaneously for wider search results.

Choose databases to include and date range

GENERAL SEARCH

TOPIC: Searches article title, author keywords, keywords plus, author abstracts. Can limit to Title only.

• Abstracts are in the database if they are supplied by the journal (1992- )
• Author keywords are supplied by the author/journal (1991- )
• Keywords Plus are derived from the titles of the cited references (1991- )

Search tips:

• phrases assume adjacency -- no need for quotation marks
• * is the wildcard symbol for more than one character (e.g. constitution*). ? is the truncation symbol for just one character (e.g. wom?n)
• in addition to AND and OR, you can use the operator SAME to find words in the same sentence, in any order (e.g. school SAME violence finds "school violence" and "violence in school")
• the default is to sort results in reverse chronological order. You can also sort results by times cited or relevance.

• Links to Cited References (article's bibliography) or Times Cited (subsequent articles citing this one)
• Find Related Records to retrieve articles that share some number of footnotes in common with the original article. Related records are sorted by the number of shared citations (footnotes).

1) Select records you want to include in your list (can mark entire page or entire search set(all))
2) Click submit marks
3) Click marked list
4) Choose fields to include and method of output

• Use natural language searching or "terms and connectors" to find secondary sources (ALR, AmJur or Law Reviews) on an area of law (e.g. immigration)
• Find a case by party name
• Use Keycite for cases in any jurisdiction to determine their current legal standing
• Find a case by citation
• Find cases by topic using KeySearch
• Find references and hyperlinks to statutes in the cases you read
