Most of the materials you will use for this class will be available either online or at the Science Library.  Your assignment to participate in a group research project and write a research paper will require conducting research in databases to find journal articles, conference papers and appropriate websites.  This handout will lead you to selected sources.

 

FINDING BOOKS

            ANTPAC - Library holdings for UCI

            MELVYL - Library holdings for all 10 UC campuses, the Regional Storage Facilities of SRLF & NRLF, Center for Research Libraries (CRL)

            WORLDCAT - global inventory of member library holdings - UCI's holdings are noted

 

SUBJECT GUIDES - A number of different subject guides may be useful for these assignments:  Biology, Social Ecology, etc

 

Library of Congress Subject Holdings - to search by subject, the following examples of subject headings may be appropriate for higher relevance searching (remember, when searching by keyword, searches subject headings in addition to elements in the title & citation and notes field):

REFERENCE WORKS - increasingly available online there are still many titles in the Science Library Reference Room in the Call Number ranges of  T174, TD and TP 248.  Some examples of titles include:

GOVERNMENT INFORMATION - much of it is increasingly available online, but you can also consult ANTPAC and find print resources usually located in the Langson Library Basement - you can also consult the Government Information Subject Pages and choose for Federal or California resources and information. 

           

INTERNET SEARCHING

Search Engines vs. metasites - evaluate resource - consider domain - .edu, .com, .gov, .org, etc.

                        1. Authority control - authorship - who, affiliation, where

                        2. Currency - note the date, the update, does it reflect the right                                      period of time

                        3. Evaluate the source - establish criteria that is meaningful to                                         covering the topic

                        4. Citing Internet resources - URL & date of the search

                        5. Capturing and citing

                        6. Copying

For assistance in preparing presentations you may find the following resources helpful in preparing a Powerpoint presentation that can capture your ideas with some visual elements including images, graphs, photographs, etc.  For some background in creating an appropriate presentation, consider the needs of your audience and play to that group.  You may find the following resources and tutorials helpful:
