ACCESS TO BOOKS

1.     ANTPAC - UCI online catalog

2.     MELVYL - UC - all 10 campuses' online catalog

3.     WorldCat - global library holdings - UCI's noted

4.     Amazon - commercial inventory

ACCESS TO JOURNAL ARTICLES: There are numerous methods to search the journal literature.  Sometimes you have many choices, and other times, you are forced to use the format in which the indexing source is available.

1.     Traditional Print – there are some older not currently maintained sources in the Library Stacks which may be of interest for historical searching.

a.      Index to Legal Periodicals (1929-1994) – LL Basement – K9 N32

2.     Article Databases – an increasing number of Indexing and Abstracting sources are available via the Internet.  Use the UCI Libraries Homepage as a point of departure and for access.  Click on "Find Online Resources" and then enter title of database in Search function or go to Subject Guide for Social Ecology and you will find one corresponding to each department with lists of resources.  Majority of relevant resources will be on the Subject Guides for PPD and CLS.  If you are working from off-campus, you will need to make sure that you have successfully loaded authentication software.  Recommended databases include:

      General Databases:

a.     Expanded Academic ASAP - searchable by keyword with wide scope and increasingly available fulltext coverage in either pdf or rekeyed

b.     WEB OF SCIENCE – the latest in searching by keyword and offers citation searching.  Provides abstracts and links to content.  Does not include law reviews.

Goes back to 1954 for SSCI and to 1945 for SCI.  Can e-mail results.  Largest indexing database we offer.

Access to Law Reviews

c.      LegalTrac – another legal database with abstracts – access to related journals and law reviews.  Indexes the LA Daily Journal.  Only an indexing source.

      g.   Lexis-Nexis - a fulltext database with NEWS and LEGAL sections - can find local, regional &                     national newspapers, and law reviews and state and federal caselaw and statutes - is selective                  coverage not cover to cover nor obtainable in order of table of contents.  There is a new search                   interface or platform - can browse or search law reviews.  When searching, you have the                                  choice of using "Terms & Connectors" or "Natural Language" for phrases.  Use and explore               pull-down menus to refine search strategy for dates of coverage, etc.  Searching by Full Text is                         probably the most comprehensive and allows you to note proximity within your strategy.  Also                  note that every journal or law review title has different years or span of coverage and not                every article may be included - thus you will need to reset the box under "DATE" - you can                      review the list of  sources included.  Output is re-keyed and not in pdf format - and is provided                        in relevancy based order - not chronological or reverse chronology.  Results can be eMailed -                         the citation is from the summary or found on the title page.  Notes and references are usually             incorporated in the text or numbered at the end.

d.     Westlaw Campus - another legal database containing legislative, statutory, case law

e.      Hein Online - full online content of law reviews except current year

Additional Databases that cover different aspects of land use and development control

f.       PAIS and ARCHIVE *- Public Affairs database which includes access to books, documents as well as journal articles

g.      Transport – covers transportation in a very detailed way, including zoning issues.  Highly recommended.

h.      Index to Current Urban Documents - ICUD - this source is of documents provided by cities and municipalities and local governments - earlier content available via indexes at : ML REF Z1223 Z7 I5 (1972-2000). Have earlier indexes to microfiche collection held at Berkeley.

i.       Journal of Planning Literature - covers planning literature and includes general bibliographies on planning related topics

j.      Environment & Safety Library (formerly BNA Environment Reporter but now on the web with searchable access) - we have access to several parts but not all of this resource - specifically News and Development, Environment issues for States for California and the Federal and International coverage.  In order to find this - click on "Environment & Safety Library) and you will get a next screen indicating what content to which access is permitted. Includes Environment Reporter, International Environmental Reporter and State Environmental Reporter

k.      SOCIOLOGICAL ABSTRACTS* -

l.       Environmental Sciences & Pollution Management* (includes Water Resources Abstracts)

m.    EiCompendex – basic engineering database.

n.     ASCE Research Library - the journals issued by the American Society for Civil Engineers, and abstracts to the conference proceedings

3.     REFERENCE TOOLS

a.      Use a variety of search engines to locate websites relevant to your topic.  The UCI Libraries Homepage offers access to over a dozen search engines.  This will probably be the source of departure for much research you will do.  Consult http://www.lib.uci.edu/online/reference/reference.html for a list of search tools and Quick Reference for additional online resources.
