Databases:

PsycINFO, Sociological Abstracts, Worldwide Political Science Abstracts, ERIC (Education), Criminal Justice Abstracts, PAIS (Public Affairs) -- all use the CSA Illumina interface. This interface includes a direct download link to RefWorks; these databases also have EndNote filters.
Web of Science (includes Social Sciences Citation Index, Science Citation Index, and Arts & Humanities Citation Index). WoS has a direct download link to a web-based version of EndNote.
Google Scholar - for comparison & treatment
Other obvious resources - for lack of time, these will not to be covered in this session but on a variety of different platforms with a range of coverage and functionality

Each CSA Illumina database has a link to a several-screen description. Once in the database, at mid-screen, click on the

PsycINFO

These database descriptions include a link to the journals/sources/serials indexed--in PsycINFO, this is a long list--over 2,000. When the list is short--as in PsycARTICLES, Sociology: A SAGE Full-Text Collection, Political Science: A SAGE Full-Text Collection, etc.--all of the titles indexed are listed on the first screen.

To cruise through the descriptions of several CSA Illumina databases, from any CSA Illumina search screen, click on Specific Databases

Indexing & abstracting functionality

Different types of searching available:

CSA: Advanced Search vs. Quick Search
WoS: General Search, Cited Reference Search, Advanced Search

Search fields: keyword, author, etc.

Truncation / wildcard -

CSA: the asterisk (*) may be used at the end of a word or within a word to search for zero-unlimited number of letters. The question mark (?) is the single-character wildcard for finding alternative spellings. See examples and more details at Help & Support (upper right of any CSA screen); under Advanced Search, click on Wildcard Symbols.
WoS: Same as CSA, with the addition of the dollar sign ($) for 0-1 character.

Backward vs. forward searching (references vs. times-cited records)

In WoS, click on and then on for a description of "Cited Reference Search."

Searching several databases concurrently ("federated searching"): advantages, disadvantages

WoS searches its component databases (SCI, SSCI, AHCI--one, two, or all three). Searching across Web of Knowledge (WoK) databases, of which WoS is one, uses "CrossSearch" - At the top of any WoS screen, change the database name to CrossSearch; click on Go. The databases to be "cross-searched" are listed at the top. Click on CHANGE PRODUCTS TO SEARCH to remove customize the list.

Criminal Justice Abstracts	1968- updated quarterly	international journals, books, reports (governmental and non-governmental, dissertations, and unpublished papers,	Covers historical and contemporary issues related to crime, criminal justice, and related applications from psychology, sociology and law enforcement. Most records link to full-text coverage.
ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center)	1966- updated monthly	articles in scholarly and trade journals, reports, government publications, books, theses, dissertations, conference papers, audiovisual media	Approx. 60% of the records are for journal articles (indicated by EJ and 6 numbers); the rest are for other types of education literature (see list at left). For this latter group (ED and 6 numbers), nearly all materials back to 1993 are available online in full-text. Earlier years may be requested via InterLibrary Loan. PAIS (Public Affairs Information Service)	1972- updated monthly	journal articles, books, government documents, statistical directories, grey literature, research reports, conference reports, publications of international agencies, microfiche, Internet material. No newspapers or newlsetters.	PAIS indexes materials from over 120 countries. In addition to English, some of the materials indexed are in French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish. Topic coverage is unusually wide and interdisciplinary. Examples: child labor, child sexual exploitation, citizen militia, climate change, counterterrorism, cybercops, disaster relief, ethnic cleansing, female circumcision, genetic engineering, globalization, intellectual property rights, Neo-Nazis, ozone depletion, political persecution, privatized space exploration, recycling, terrorism. PsycARTICLES	varies by title, ranging from 1894- to back to 2001. Updated weekly	articles from 31 APA journals, 15 APA Educational Publishing Foundation journals, 3 Canadian Psychological Assn. journals, and 8 Hogrefe & Huber journals	Indexes only 58 journals, but all articles are available online in full-text, usually in both pdf and html formats; most go back to vol. 1, issue 1. Each record has a link to the Table of Contents (TOC) for the issue containing the article. While full-text is attractive, searching PsycINFO will be far more productive than searching PsycARTICLES alone, since PsycINFO indexes all of the PsycARTICLES journals. PsycINFO	1806- updated weekly	articles in professional journals, chapters, books, reports, theses, dissertations	Abstracts begin in 1967. "Empirical Study" and "Literature Review" may be selected as a Methodology limit. A UCI-specific guide to PsycINFO is at http://course.lib.uci.edu/ss/psych/PsycINFOviaCSAIllumina-S06.pdf . Beginning in 2001, records for journal articles include lists of references (with embedded links to abstracts, times-cited, and full-text, where available). PsycINFO indexes approx. 2,200 journals, including all the PsycARTICLES journals (see description immediately above). Sociological Abstracts	1952- updated monthly	articles in professional journals, book reviews, books, book chapters, dissertations, conference papers	Approx. 2,000 journals are monitored for indexing; they are listed at http://www-ca1.csa.com/ids70/serials_source_list.php?db=socioabs-set-c. Beginning in 2002, many records from key journals include the list of references, often with embedded links to abstracts, times-cited, and full-text online where available. The conference papers are challenging to find and usually require contacting the author for a copy. Worldwide Political Science Abstracts	1975- updated monthly	journal articles, books, book chapters, book reviews, dissertations, film reviews, software reviews	As of Feb. 2007, over 1,600 journals are indexed, of which 67% are published outside the U.S. For article records from core journals added since 2001, the lists of references have been added, some with embedded links to abstracts, times-cited, and full-text where available. Web of Knowledge (WoK) databases	Date Coverage	Types of publications	Some unique features
Web of Science comprises Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-Expanded) Arts & Humanities Citation Index (AHCI)	SSCI: 1956- SCI: 1900- AHCI: 1975-	Journals across all disciplines: SSCI: over 1,725 journals across 50 disciplines SCI: 5,900 major journals across 150 disciplines AHCI: 1,144 leading journals, plus selective indexing of over 6,800 major science & social science journals for relevant articles.	Cited reference searching is the primary strength of this huge database. Author searching uses surnames but not first names--only first and middle initials. No thesaurus, so productive results require skillful keyword searching--think of all variant and synonymous terms. Logical operators include AND, OR, NOT, and SAME. For a description, click on Information for New Users (upper right), then on , and select Search Operators. The default setting for searches is across all WoS databases--SSCI, SCI, and AHCI--so be sure to un-select those not needed at the beginning of a search.
Journal Citation Reports (JCR) JCR Social Sciences Edition JCR Science Edition At the first Web of Science screen, use the pull-down menu to select Journal Citation Reports	1999-2005	JCR Soc Sci Ed contains data from over 1,700 journals JCR Sci Ed contains data from over 5,900 journals	JCR editions are published annually; each year is searched separately. Journals indexed come from over 60 countries. JCR is a comprehensive and unique resource for evaluating and comparing journals. It is the only source of citation data on journals, such as the most frequently cited journals in a field, the highest impact journals in a field, and the largest journals in a field. Read the description--click on Information for New Users (upper right), then on , and select "Using Journal Citation Reports Wisely."

CSA databases feature a RefWorks link for direct downloading of records
WoS features a web-based version of EndNote, which debuted in December 2006. It is compatible only with EndNote X.

Saving a search for later use
